HOUSTON, TX -- Dr. J. Craig Venter, known for his contributions to sequencing the human genome, described how genome mapping could lead to organisms that would provide the basis for making practical hydrogen-based energy systems and sequester carbon to participants in CERA week, February 10-14. Dr. Venter delivered the keynote address at CERA week's Thursday night dinner.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Venter, president of the Institute for Biological Energy Alternatives (IBEA) and Nobel Laureate Hamilton O. Smith, M.D., IBEA's scientific director, briefed industry publications on their efforts to identify and map the organisms in the Atlantic Ocean, beginning with the Sargasso Sea, where already the pair have sequenced genomes for organisms that consume carbon and release hydrogen.
