I would first like to say that I appreciate your magazine as a good resource on natural health information. I do, however, have a quibble with the article on seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in the January 2003 issue. Several years ago, I was taking St. John's wort as a supplement for (of all things!) SAD. At that time, I started to have what I thought were mild panic attacks characterized by rapid heartbeat. Although whenever I encounter information on St. John's wort in print, then and now, there is invariably a warning about the possibility of developing photo-sensitivity with its use, I never, ever read anything about the possibility of it causing rapid heartbeat.
It was only by chance that I read about it online somewhere. The warning was, in effect, that it shouldn't be used by people prone to panic attacks or by those with high blood pressure. I had neither, but I'm sure I would have made the connection much sooner had this supplement been regularly associated with such a warning. I stopped taking St. John's wort, and the rapid heartbeat ceased inside of three days.
