LAS VEGAS _ Light-heavyweight champion Roy Jones proved he could take John Ruiz's best shots Saturday night as he convincingly took Ruiz's World Boxing Association heavyweight title by unanimous decision.
Thus, Jones became only the second light-heavyweight in history to accomplish that feat; Michael Spinks did it to Larry Holmes in 1985.
Ruiz had to settle for proving that he could not be knocked down by Jones' hardest punches, although they bloodied Ruiz's nose repeatedly.
"People said I've never been hit by a heavyweight punch, I couldn't take a punch," said the celebrating victor. "I don't give a damn about a punch."
Jones said he was "totally in control of the fight," and although he did not change his style drastically, "everybody said I was going to run, but I knew I wasn't going to run."
A disconsolate Ruiz complained that referee Jay Nady did not allow him to "punch my way out of clinches," and allowed Jones to hold too much.
