CHICAGO _ Next to Ron Santo and Marvin Miller, no one was more disappointed with last week's Hall of Fame voting than Whitey Herzog.
"That's the end of it," Herzog said after receiving only 25-of-79 votes. "It isn't ever going to work out now."
During his tenure as a manager and executive with Texas, Kansas City and St. Louis, Herzog was known for his bluntness. His reaction shows he hasn't changed a lot.
"Now, they don't vote for four years," Herzog said. "A lot more guys will have passed away_guys who voted for me."
Hopefully, that won't prove true. But whether or not it does, the first election raises serious questions whether the panel of living Hall of Famers that now constitutes the Veterans Committee ever electing an executive or manager.
After all, umpire Doug Harvey (48) was the only man from that group to receive even 50 percent of the votes cast and he fell short of the 75 percent requirement by 12 votes.
