HOMESTEAD, Fla. _ Team owner and driver Michael Andretti posted the time to beat in qualifying for Sunday's Toyota Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. But along came his teammate and new employee, Tony Kanaan, to win the pole and knock him to second.
Last October, a few days after Kanaan signed the contract to drive for Andretti Green Racing this season in the Indy Racing League, Kanaan tried to make a last-lap pass and ran Andretti and himself into the wall at the Grand Prix Americas in downtown Miami.
These two incidents begged the question to Kanaan: "Are you worried about your job security?"
Both Andretti and Kanaan, who are among six drivers who switched to the IRL from Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) this season, laughed.
"Last year in that race, we were still competitors. He wasn't my boss yet," Kanaan said, smiling. "I put him out and I didn't get fired. I wasn't concerned today."
That's because Andretti not only rooted for Kanaan but passed along track and car information from his earlier qualifying session. Kanaan's crew made changes based on his information, and the revamped car completed a field-best lap around the 1.5-mile oval, averaging 203.560 mph.
