MIAMI _ A four-race countdown to the climax of one of the most successful careers in motorsports history begins at Homestead Miami Speedway on Sunday.
But Michael Andretti, 40-year-old son of yet another legend of the game, doesn't plan to punch cruise control into the next phase of a life spent daring greatly.
``The goal is to be in the lead in the championship points after the Indianapolis 500 and then retire,'' Andretti said, smiling broadly.
He was sitting in the hospitality area of the Andretti Green Racing team, master of all he surveyed. He looked relaxed, at peace and eager for a swift but smooth transition.
The first of only four Indy Racing League events in which his roles as team owner and driver will overlap is the Toyota Indy 300.
His history on Homestead's 1.5-mile oval stamps Andretti as a favorite in the 200-lap chase. His front-row qualifying run Saturday in his Dallara/Honda seconds that notion.
