JUPITER, Fla. _ Josh Beckett had a banner week with rod and reel, catching a spinner shark one day and landing a 11-{-pound bass with fellow pitcher Doug Bochtler another.
Beckett's fishing fortunes didn't carry over to the pitching mound on Saturday, though. He coughed up a couple of runs, surrendered five hits and walked two in his spring-training debut.
More significant was the fact his blister-prone finger emerged unscathed, yet another signal that Beckett's days of a tender-fingered fireballer might be behind him.
"Maybe we got it," Beckett said. "Maybe we licked this."
If so, Beckett and the Marlins can rest a little easier this season after one in which a recurring blister on his right middle finger forced him onto the disabled list three times.
And clubhouse bathroom fixtures might also avoid his wrath. He "beat the heck out of everything" in the visiting clubhouse bathroom at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium last season when one of his blister eruptions led to an early exit.
