CLEARWATER, Fla. _ The revamped Veterans Committee pitched a shutout in its debut appearance last week. It did not elect any of the 26 eligible former players to the Hall of Fame.
Gil Hodges? Nope.
Tony Oliva? Not this time.
Ron Santo? Better luck in two years.
Joe Torre? You'll eventually get in, but it will take your managerial credentials to open the door.
The new Veterans Committee, which will vote again in two years, gives a vote to each of the 58 living Hall of Famers, as well as 27 other baseball lifers. If all the living Hall of Famers hold the same beliefs as Mike Schmidt, there might never be another player elected by the Veterans Committee.
