BOSTON _ Sometimes, it takes a 23-year-old rookie's fists to jump-start your hockey club.
Jim Vandermeer, in the tradition of Luke Richardson, dropped the gloves twice on Saturday against two established veteran fighters to give his team some energy.
"He's got a lot of courage, that kid," said Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock after a 3-2 overtime win against the Bruins.
Vandermeer fought P.J. Stock early in the game and then dropped his gloves again right after Boston's Rob Zamuner had tied the score, 1-1, in the second period. The Flyers needed a lift right then, and this time, the kid fought heavyweight Krzysztof Oliwa.
