MILWAUKEE _ After playing basketball for more than 12 years in the great Northwest, guard Gary Payton had grown fond of the city of Seattle and its fans. The feeling was mutual. Payton was regaled in the same manner as baseball's Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey Jr. and other former Seattle sports icons who have relocated.
Payton has no quarrel with the city or its fans. They showed their affection for him when they stood and cheered when a video tribute to him was shown before a game against Milwaukee on the evening after the trade between the Bucks and the SuperSonics was completed. And Payton was not even in the building, electing to stay at home with his family since he would not have been able to play anyway.
"Thank you Gary" were the final words of the scoreboard tribute that night.
It has been no secret that bad blood existed between Payton and SuperSonics management. After the trade was made, Payton didn't hesitate to let people know how he felt about owner Howard Schultz and President Wally Walker.
