Feb. 28--CARY, N.C. -- Mayor Glen Lang launched an angry defense Thursday night against accusations that his business dealings with a leading apartment manager had created a perceived conflict of interest and impropriety.

Carrying a stack of binders and notes to the podium, Lang berated his fellow council members for relying on unfounded allegations to accuse him of possible wrongdoing.

"You just dragged the council's name through the mud," Lang said near the end of a 30-minute monologue. "What you did was pathetic and political."
