Feb. 28--The Silicon Forest veterans hired to engineer a turnaround at financially beleaguered software-maker Merant PLC were able Thursday to report the company's first quarterly profit in more than four years.
At $300,000, the bottom line is hardly bulging, though it is an improvement from the third quarter a year earlier when Merant lost $26.7 million. And the black ink is largely the result of diminishing write-offs of goodwill generated when the company was created by an acquisition in 1998.
