Feb. 27--Santa Ana Unified fired its top construction consultant Wednesday, saying it will rely now on internal staff to manage its troubled school-building program.
The early-morning vote ends an often-rocky three-year marriage between the county's largest and most-crowded school district and Los Angeles-based Del Terra Real Estate Services.
The district plans to sue the firm for breach of contract and will seek money from Del Terra for failure to perform its contract. Santa Ana schools officials already have refused to pay nearly $4 million in Del Terra's bills.
"The district has been severely injured," Superintendent Al Mijares said.
In a three-paragraph response, Del Terra President Luis Rojas defended his company's performance.
