Feb. 24--The 2003 Missouri Pork Expo will be held today and tomorrow at the Holiday Inn Expo Center. The Expo kicks off with a producer education seminar entitled "Contracting -- Is it right for you?" Hosted by the University of Missouri Commercial Ag team, the seminar begins at 1 p.m. today and concludes at noon tomorrow.
Everything from equipment to feed and pharmaceutical supplies will be on display when the Expo Trade Show opens at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Admission is $10.
A silent auction also begins at 1 p.m. Pork retail marketing on a local, national and international level is the theme with guest speakers at two different times on Tuesday. At 10:45 a.m. three pork producers who retail home raised pork locally will discuss their strategies and successes. John Cravens from the Meat Export Federation and the National Pork Board will discuss the effects of national and international marketing on Missouri's producers at 3 p.m.
Missouri's youth are the focus through the day Tuesday. Six district winners will compete in the FFA Pork Speech Contest state finals. Later in the day teams of four students from schools around the state compete in a pork quiz bowl. A live auction and awards program follow the Pork Industry Buffet beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Auction items include framed prints and a child-size John Deer gator, as well as products for any swine operation. Tickets to the buffet and auction are $15.
The Expo Trade Show opens again Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon. Missouri Secretary of State Matt Blunt is the special guest at the pork leadership luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Tickets are available in advance or at the door.
