Feb. 20--BELLEVILLE, Kan.--Car dealer Ron Sankey doesn't like the idea of a sales tax hike.
Most in his line of work would balk at such a notion, but the Belleville businessman finds it tough to argue against a $6.2 million expansion and remodeling of the Republic County Hospital.
Mail ballots were sent Friday to all registered voters in Republic County, asking whether to approve raising the sales tax rate from 6.3 percent to 7.3 percent to raise $5 million for the project.
"I'm against it as far as the tax goes," said Sankey, owner of Sankey Motors, "but the purpose is fantastic. Our health-care industry is one of the most important in Belleville."
