There are more obese people than there are daily smokers or heavy drinkers, according to a study released March 12 by the Journal of Health Affairs.
A telephone survey of 10,000 adults concluded that 19 percent of the respondents classified themselves as daily smokers and six percent identified themselves as heavy drinkers. By contrast, 23 percent of those surveyed were considered obese.
To be clinically classified as obese, a person must have a Body Mass Index greater than 30, which is calculated as a ratio of height to weight. Consult your physician for more information.
