Apr. 12--A U.S. Department of Transportation study released yesterday found that the average cost of airfares in nine Northeast markets fell dramatically when low-cost airlines moved in to compete with the dominant carrier.
In four other airports that were part of the study, including Pittsburgh International Airport, the average ticket price remained the same or rose by as much as 10 percent.
The study compared the average fares at these airports between the second quarter of 1996 and the same three-month period in 2001.
