Dixon lifts Terps over Hoosiers for NCAA title.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)
ATLANTA _ Juan Dixon fired true and accurate shots to the basket the entire night, but he spent the final eight-tenths of a second of last night's NCAA men's basketball championship game rearing back and chucking the basketball toward the rafters of the Georgia Dome.
Playing for the last month with passion, heart and determination, Dixon would not be denied in leading Maryland to its first national championship, scoring 18 points to lift the Terrapins to a 64-52 victory over Indiana in front of a crowd of 53,406 that turned the building into a sea of red.
Lonny Baxter provided the grit and guts inside, scoring 15 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, and the Terrapins played with fire at both ends of the court. That was clearly evident on defense. They held the Hoosiers to 34.5-percent shooting, including 28.6 percent from inside ...
