Except it was said more as accusation than assessment.
It wasn't so much a compliment as a demand for proof. It was a dare. Inherent was the suggestion that for all their glittering talent the Terps would find a way to self-destruct. They had a good thing going, but they'd blow it. Wait and see.
Monday night, vindication arrived, and it was sweet beyond believing.
Maryland won the national championship of college baskets, pulling away from game and gallant but eventually earth-bound Indiana, and winning with a score that looks like something from a generation ago: 64-52.
At that point in the game when they had tended to be susceptible to a case of the shakes, the Terps held together and played with power and purpose. They have seemed to play better from behind than from in front. Last night, though, there was no meltdown.
