ATLANTA _ A year ago, so horribly bitter. This time, so wonderfully sweet.
Fifty-two weeks after blowing the chance of a lifetime in the national semifinals, Maryland made amends here last night. It wasn't especially artistic, it won't be particularly memorable, but the resolute Terrapins repelled a gutty Indiana club in the second half and won the NCAA men's basketball championship 64-52 at the Georgia Dome.
Maryland won at the foul line, attempting 24 free throws in the second half to none for Indiana. Maryland won on defense, holding the Hoosiers to a mere eight points in the last 9 minutes, 52 seconds after Indiana had taken a 44-42 lead. Maryland won with frenetic Coach Gary Williams getting his hair happily mussed by forward Chris Wilcox with 50 seconds remaining.
It was succulent redemption ...
