SAN JOSE, Calif. _ In perhaps the most visible sign of the nation returning to normal after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, federal officials Monday announced plans to replace National Guard troops at airports with police officers by the end of May.
While the National Guard deployment was never considered permanent, Monday's announcement gave the first indication of what would happen when they left. Instead of soldiers in camouflage carrying assault rifles, armed police will oversee passengers' trips through the metal detectors.
"This is the end of the airport mission," said Major Edward Lee, commander of the National Guard forces at Northern California's 13 public airports.
