SACRAMENTO, Calif. _ Hoping to draw attention to the poor health of California's school children, three lawmakers are calling for stricter standards for physical education and want schools to place greater emphasis on students' fitness.
The time has come to make physical education a top priority in the wake of tests conducted last year showing that only 23 percent of the state's fifth-, seventh- and ninth-graders meet minimum fitness requirements, said Sen. Tom Torlakson, D-Antioch. The same tests, called the Fitnessgram, showed that 30 percent of those students are overweight.
"I think, in the end, we're talking about billions of dollars in extra health costs if we don't turn this around," Torlakson said.
