SANTA ANA, Calif. _ At least a half dozen boats trolled in front of Newport Beach on Saturday in hopes of catching a king salmon on opening day.
The action was slower than their trolling speed.
"No bites at all (were reported)," said John Doughty, who monitors the action over the radio at JD's Big Game Tackle on Balboa Island.

Private boaters out of Ventura enjoyed a pretty good opener on salmon 12 to 20 pounds with one or two reaching 30 pounds.
