Jennifer Larmore emerges as a consummate entertainer on this festive filming of a recent recital. She stakes no claim to any of the major song literature, or even extended minor cycles, instead offering a typical opera-diva program -- starting with signature turns from her stage repertoire.

Larmore's Rossini and Handel selections seem richer and more distinctive without full orchestra. Even if the conclusion of her Semiramide cabaletta is not the last word in precision, the dramatic urgency and emotional focus more than compensate. Her fast staccato sequences from Hercules and Semele are ideally crisp, and she's surprisingly affecting in Purcell's less showy "Music for a While."

Happily, the occasion (a program at the Purchase College Performing Arts Center) finds the singer in top form, completely free of strain or unevenness between registers. The timbre is especially alluring in its well-spun turns and quick attack, but also pleasing in ...
