It's almost de rigueur these days for American classical singers to insist on recording at least one crossover disc. They never learn.
In the last fifty years, only a few of them -- Eileen Farrell and Dawn Upshaw come to mind -- have been able to develop a pop vocal personality so completely authentic and distinct that you'd never guess they were opera singers. Barbara Hendricks's new Gershwin salute sounds like an opera singer attempting very conscientiously to do jazz. It's not a comfortable fit.
She tries hard, but despite the jazzy accompaniment, despite the effort to loosen up, despite all the excursions into chest register, Hendricks is never able to dispense with the billowy, operatic head tones and the overly precise diction.
