The benefits of staking out a small corner of the repertoire and then performing it extremely well are clear from Patricia Petibon's recital of French Baroque music. We are left wondering what else she is capable of, since everything here is so comprehensively interpreted. The program is something of a tasting menu of the period, with a good bit of Rameau, some Charpentier and Lully, and a Grandval rarity. (In fact, the great achievement of this album is that it reminds us how the word-setting and forms of twentieth-century opera actually returned it to its roots.) Patrick Cohen-Akenine and Les Folies Francoises are energetic accompanists who also offer two instrumental pieces, the sort of bonus that is always so effective in early-music recordings and really ought to be tried more often in other repertoire.
