Who would have thought such a wonderful, engaging rendition of Die Agyptische Helena could come out of a provincial Italian opera theater, with a cast of virtual unknowns?
This least-performed of the Strauss-Hofmannsthal operas does get very occasional outings -- either staged or in concert form -- but most opera fans are familiar only with Helena's great "Zweite Brautnacht," which begins Act II and is in the repertoire of any soprano who can get through it. According to the booklet that accompanies this CD, the January 2001 performances documented here constituted the Italian premiere of Helena.
Given the consistent, disciplined performance, plus the fact that the recording comes with a complete German-English libretto (something missing from the RCA release of an otherwise marvelous live 1970 Vienna Helena), this CD might be the all-around best bet for someone unfamiliar with the work.
