Everyone is trying to sell "solutions" these days. Not owning the latest cell phone is apparently a "problem" to which cell phone manufacturers will gladly provide their "solutions." Having trouble with your workplace network? Well, consultants are more than willing to offer their "solutions" to your "problem." Do you have only 42 pieces of software on your PC? I'm sure that some software company will offer you its "solution" to your "problem" -with the 43rd piece of software. I never knew I had so many problems in need of "solutions" until quite recently. I guess I've been deprived or misguided for years now.
Not to be outdone by other technology companies, LexisNexis and Westlaw both offer their own "solutions." Back in the "good old days" of just a few years ago, these "solutions" were more generically called "intranet toolkits." As with most aspects of Web technology, these products have matured quite a bit. It is indeed very interesting to see just how easily one can integrate Westlaw and LexisNexis content into a Web page. In this month's column, I take a look at both vendors' offerings.
