A new study reported in the January issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that almost 50 million overweight Americans suffer from a condition now known as metabolic syndrome. You might know the obesity-related condition by its symptoms, which can include high blood pressure, bad cholesterol, high blood sugar and a beer belly. Lifestyle factors, which include pigging out and not exercising enough, play a huge role, says Dr. Earl Ford, a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, which conducted the study.
In a similarly disturbing study, the Tufts School of Nutrition in Boston announced on January 3 that the diets of college students may be even worse than their parents imagined. Studying the dietary habits of college students over a four-year period, Tufts researchers discovered that nearly 70 percent don't get the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
