KANSAS CITY _ Linebacker Donnie Edwards never made the Pro Bowl, but he was a consistent and popular player who believed he would be a Chief for life.
Edwards found out otherwise Thursday when he was released after failing to agree with the Chiefs on terms of a new contract. His old deal called for the Chiefs to make a $2.8 million payment to Edwards if he was on their roster as of Friday.
That was too steep for the Chiefs' tastes.
Although Edwards hadn't been optimistic about reaching agreement with the Chiefs on a new deal, the finality of the move left him in shock.
"Derrick Thomas and I always talked about playing our whole careers for the Chiefs," Edwards said from his home in California. "We talked about having our name on the stadium.
"At least one of us succeeded."
