MIAMI _ Despite this week's announcement that the recession may be over, South Florida's unemployment rate rose in January. The unemployment rate rose to 8.1 percent in Miami-Dade and 6.2 percent in Broward, according to figures released by the Agency for Workforce Innovation Friday.
That means a total of 139,635 South Floridians are out of work, an increase of 2,640 from December.
''That's really not too bad,'' said Warren May, spokesman for the Agency for Workforce Innovation. ``If you look at job growth, over the year, Miami-Dade had positive job growth of 0.5 percent.''
The state's total nonagricultural employment grew by 0.1 percent from a year ago, hinting at a slight rebound. While the government sector created the most new jobs and grew the fastest, services _ the state's largest industry _ had a much slower growth rate.
