COLUMBIA, S.C. _ Some S.C. National Guard troops say they felt pressure to donate to Adjutant General Stan Spears' election campaign _ and that's prompting calls to change the way South Carolina picks its Guard leader.
South Carolina is the only state that elects its adjutant general by a popular vote. Spears commands more than 10,000 National Guard troops.
Since 1998, Army National Guard officers have contributed at least one-fifth of the $372,000 Spears' campaign has raised, according to records reviewed by The State newspaper.
Spears' campaign says he has not pressured any guard member to contribute to his election efforts.
But reports of pressure _ and the more than $70,000 officers have given Spears _ brought sharp words from critics of South Carolina's selection method.
