WALNUT CREEK, Calif. _ Katherine H. Smith longs for a simpler time in education, when teachers lived next door to their students and children felt the support of a caring community.
That's what it was like when she attended Martinez Junior High and Alhambra High in the 1950s. Her math teacher, who lived behind her, even tutored her in her kitchen.
"You don't get that today," Smith said. "You lose that connection, that human touch."
For the past six years, Smith has tried to recreate that environment for students who live in more troubled neighborhoods and families as trustee of the Anaheim Union High School District.
