WARNER ROBINS, Ga. _ There are no shortcuts or sugarcoatings for what John Dougherty does, or where he does it.
In what many would term "allowing conviction to run amok," the Americus native carries education _ Christian education _ to the world's most volatile, and arguably most dangerous, location: Jerusalem.
With intifada raging between Jews and Palestinians, Dougherty heads three Assembly of God schools providing kindergarten through high school training to Palestinian youths _ youths who willingly attend required Christian/biblical classes for a shot at an overall U.S. curriculum.
The Assembly of God, America's largest Pentecostal movement, sanctions and subsidizes the schools: a K3 through 12 campus in the Palestinian enclave of Shufat, a K3 through 8 facility in Palestinian-controlled Bethlehem and K3 through first grade in Ramallah, the headquarters borough for Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
Dougherty, a Mercer University theology graduate, says the schools emphasize academics. "We have a very good education program," he said, "probably the best private school in Jerusalem.
