WASHINGTON _ Although scientists disagree on some points, here is the most widely accepted timeline of Earth's beginnings:
_4.57 billion years ago: Our solar system forms out of the collapse of a huge cloud of gas and dust in the Milky Way galaxy. Astronomers estimate the age of the solar system by radioactive dating of elements found in meteorites that later landed on Earth.
