With Ben Heppner, Johan Botha and Gosta Winbergh on the scene, the heldentenor drought may be ending. It would be nice if we could add the name of Robert Dean Smith to the list. On the basis of this possibly premature, probably misguided CD, however, that seems wishful thinking.
A youngish champion from Chetopa, Kansas, Smith began attracting international attention when he replaced a stellar colleague as Walther yon Stolzing at the Bayreuth Festival of 1997. Last summer he succeeded Placido Domingo as Siegmund at the Wagner shrine. He made a successful debut at San Francisco Opera (Walther again) this season, and his international datebook is filling up fast.
Unlike some of his competitors, he cuts a credibly romantic figure onstage. Like many a Wagnerian hero before him, he began as a baritone, started his career modestly in the German provinces and is purposefully making his way toward the bona-fide heavyweight repertory. There are no signs of Siegfried or Tristan in his official biography yet. One hopes he will move toward these slowly, if at all.
