1. At the beginning of its current season, HOUSTON GRAND OPERA became the first opera company in the world to use permanent movie-theater-style screens to enhance the view of its stage for patrons. Dubbed "a communal set of opera glasses" by HGO's general director, DAVID GOCKLEY, "OperaVision" is an arrangement of six plasma and projection screens in select areas of the Grand Tier and Balcony levels of HGO's Wortham Theater, designed to provide close-up views of the stage action as captured by three cameras.

KRASSIMIRA STOYANOVA, whose Valentine lit up Opera Orchestra of New York's Les Huguenots last spring, returned to Manhattan in November for Lida in OONY's Carnegie Hall La Battaglia di Legnano and a Met debut as Violetta. Currently Munich's Micaela, the Bulgarian soprano moves on to Cologne and Vienna in April for Rachel in La Juive, then takes on Mimi in a brace of June Bohemes at Covent Garden. Stoyanova finishes out the spring with a return to Vienna for Liu in Turandot.
Maestro CHRISTOPH ESCHENBACH Will lead a master class for conductors in conjunction with the Sinfonietta Cracovia in Cracow, Poland this month. A three-day (March 9-11) symposium on orchestral conducting, to be held at Cracow's Philharmonic Hall and Royal Castle, will culminate in a Sinfonietta Cracovia concert.
