According to a nationwide survey, most Americans over age 50 say supplements are "essential" to their health and well being. The survey found: 76 percent of women and 63 percent of men over 50 take dietary supplements, and 73 percent of women consider them essential. In a departure from previous studies, over 66 percent of the respondents believe that food, alone, is "not enough for [their] dietary needs." About 62 percent of older adults perceive dietary supplements to be "an essential investment" in their health. The report also shows that although most older Americans expect to receive information about supplements from their doctors, only 40 percent have ever received recommendations.
