Bush, Musharraf hail ties, but U.S. cool to Pakistan wish list.(Chicago Tribune)

WASHINGTON _ President Bush on Wednesday praised President Pervez Musharraf's "great courage and vision" and vowed to repay Pakistan's critical assistance in the war in Afghanistan with hundreds of millions of dollars in aid.

But even as Bush pledged to nurture America's restored relationship with Islamabad, he brushed aside Musharraf's request for immediate trade relief and the resumption of U.S. weapons shipments to Pakistan. Those items topped Musharraf's wish list as he began two days of meetings with top administration officials.

"The forces of history have accelerated the growth of friendship between the United States and Pakistan," Bush said. "I believe the pages of history will record that this friendship was hopeful and positive and will lead to peace."
