THE AUSTRALIAN BANKERS Association has poured cold water on government proposals to improve safety at automatic teller machines, saying cameras and security guards would be very expensive.
"Certainly, cameras aren't the answer to everything," the association's chief executive officer, David Bell, said. "And unless you have security guards there 24 hours a day, they're not much use."
In Victoria recently, Police Minister Andre Haermeyer said the government was considering proposals to lift security at ATMs after criticism from the State Opposition that not enough had been done.
