Getting a first look at a talented new actress in a great part is exciting and sad. Exciting, because I anticipate the other things this newcomer can do. And sad because she'll be lucky if she ever gets another great part.
So I said a wistful "Hello" to Naomi Watts who, in "Mulholland Drive," gives one of the two or three best performances of the year. She's Betty, a no-talent actress we see rehearsing for a big audition. Then, she goes to the audition (with Chad Everett, of all people) and blows us away, morphing into a performer of passion, anger and wit. It's an astonishing transformation, and Watt does it right in front of our eyes.
