NEW YORK _ There's no quicker way to assess the state of the world than to attend the annual World Economic Forum, usually held in Davos, Switzerland.

It's an easy target to caricature, but this meeting of 1,100 of the world's most prominent business leaders, politicos, academics and scientists has an uncanny way of reflecting the prevailing global mood.

No surprise, this year the mood is a bit somber. The forum site was shifted from a Swiss mountain resort to the glitzy, but hurting, Big Apple. The Swiss _ still smarting from violent antiglobalization demos at previous economic forums _ were very nervous about security after Sept. 11, but forum organizers insist they moved the venue simply to show solidarity with New Yorkers. ...
