Respect for women, President Bush said in his State of the Union address, is one of the ``non-negotiable demands of human dignity'' for which ``America will always stand firm.''

Respect for women means respecting their basic health care needs, including family planning services, AIDS prevention, and prenatal and postpartum care. It means providing education for girls so they can raise their standard of living. These are the services the U.N. Population Fund provides throughout the developing world.
