The products and trends that accelerated sales of consumer electronics during the 2001 holiday season will help the industry reach record sales numbers in 2002, according to consumer electronics (CE) retail industry leaders participating in a panel discussion yesterday at the 2002 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). During the Retail Power Panel moderated by Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), panelists Alan McCollough, president & CEO Circuit City; Bradbury Anderson, vice chairman, COO and president, Best Buy Co., Inc.; Greg Drew, President, CEO and founder, 800.COM; Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO, Amazon.com, Inc.; Leonard Roberts, chairman and CEO, RadioShack; and Meg Whitman, president and CEO, eBay, discussed the drivers and obstacles faced by the consumer electronics industry. Consumer electronics sales during the fourth quarter experienced an increase due to a flurry of gift buying around the holidays, according to the panelists, each of who described the products and demographics behind the upswing. Consumer demand for digital video products, including game consoles, digital camcorders and DVD players were the strongest sellers this past holiday season for most of the retailers, while supporting products like cables and adaptors from Radio Shack and DVD titles from Amazon.com provided additional revenue.
