MIAMI _ University of Maryland athletic director Deborah A. Yow is getting a new watch. Even if she forgot about it.
Five years ago, Yow challenged the incoming class of football recruits to go out and earn a bowl trip. If they did, she would let one of the players replace her Southeastern Conference championship watch with a new Maryland watch.
Yow had forgotten her pledge until senior running back Marc Riley reminded her after the Terrapins' victory against North Carolina State clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and the Bowl Championship Series Orange Bowl berth.
Her SEC watch, for leading the Florida women's basketball team to a 22-9 record and the WNIT final in 1984-85, is coming off as soon as the ACC championship watches arrive.
``Marc came up to me after the N.C. State game and told me to get ready to take off my SEC watch,'' said Yow, in her eighth year as the Terrapins' athletic director. ``I was shocked. I never thought that any of those guys still remembered. I certainly didn't.''
Riley never forgot.
