PHILADELPHIA _ Congratulations, Notre Dame. One-plus years into the 21st century, one of the nation's most celebrated universities managed to accomplish something most American institutions managed in the 20th.
By hiring Tyrone Willingham, an African-American, to coach its football team, Notre Dame finally integrated the ranks of its head coaches.
Silly me for thinking that Auburn or Alabama, Mississippi or Georgia would be the last places the walls would come tumbling down for coaches of major college sports.
That it is even news that the belated integration of the athletic department at so lofty a university years after said university desired the services of minorities on the ball-carrying, ball-dribbling end is more an indictment than a reason to applaud.
