But the first day of the new year and the next season looked a lot like the past in Tuesday's Gator Bowl. That was a good thing for a young FSU team that suffered its most losses in 15 seasons.
The Seminoles, as they did two years ago in the 2000 Sugar Bowl over Virginia Tech, parlayed a blocked punt and big passes against cornerback Ronyell Whitaker into an effective 30-17 victory over the 15th-ranked Hokies.
