TAMPA, Fla. _ Some USC players took a knee on the sideline and sought a hand to hold. Others preferred to be alone as sophomore place-kicker Daniel Weaver lined up a 42-yard field goal.

As badly as the Gamecocks wanted to win Tuesday's Outback Bowl, they couldn't stand the thought of going into overtime after blowing a 28-point lead.

"I was praying to Buddha, Allah, God, whoever would listen. I was praying to them all," running back Derek Watson said.

Weaver came through, barely getting the ball over the crossbar as time expired in a 31-28 heart-stopper before a sold-out Raymond James Stadium crowd of 66,249.

"It was a heck of a football game," USC coach Lou Holtz said. "I'm still sort of in a f.f.f. `Wow.' I don't know what happens if that sucker doesn't go through."

The win gave 14th-ranked South Carolina a perfect topping on a 9-3 season, the second-best in school history, and puts the team in position to challenge its best season-ending ranking ever, 11th in 1984.

It also sent 13 senior starters off with a memorable finish, particularly quarterback Phil Petty, who was named MVP after passing for 227 yards and two touchdowns. The Gamecocks' 17 wins the past two seasons are the most in any two-year span at the school.
