DETROIT _ The symbolism, possessing all the subtlety of a champagne hangover, wasn't lost on anyone. The new year, with its fresh hope and opportunity, is christened with the hiring of a black football coach at Notre Dame, the most storied program in the college game.
Tyrone Willingham was quietly happy at Stanford. He never had to win big, only enough to appease the deep-pocketed donors. A lavish university endowment already made him a millionaire.
A reluctant trailblazer, Willingham was nonetheless presented an opportunity he couldn't refuse. The former Michigan State running back will follow the footsteps of Rockne, Leahy and Parseghian.
