TAMPA, Fla. _ Lost in Ohio State's fourth-quarter rally was a third-quarter play that kept South Carolina in the Outback Bowl.
Ahead 26-0 after an Andrew Pinnock touchdown run, USC coach Lou Holtz decided to go for the two-point conversion with 5:38 left in the third quarter.
At the time, it appeared to be a meaningless decision because of the Gamecocks' commanding lead. Place-kicker Dan Weaver had missed the previous extra point.
Quarterback Phil Petty found Derek Watson in the end zone for the two-pointer and a 28-0 advantage.
The Buckeyes scored the next 28 points in a 13-minute span to tie the game, won by USC 31-28.
"Lucky for us, I caught that ball," Watson said. "It was a great call to go for two because it would have been 28-27 and we probably would have lost."
_Watson in the slot. The Gamecocks' two-point conversion incorporated a new look, with Watson at slot receiver. The junior, who strictly has played running back until this game, lined up about half the game between the tackle and the wideout.
